People Overestimate What They Can Do in a Day and Underestimate What They Can Do in a Year

The quote about underestimating what you can do has been attributed to various people, from Bill Gates to religious authors and self-help gurus. Whoever said it, it’s true.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Ever since I got back from Chile a couple of weeks ago, every day has been a micro-frustration of thinking I was going to get more done. There were three things I wanted to get done over the weekend. I finished one of those. Monday, I finished another one. UPS lost a contract I sent express mail last week and so I need to go to the Chilean consulate tomorrow and get it notarized again.

Every day there are speed bumps … and yet …

In the last year, we were able to increase the number of games we offer across all platforms from 24 to 51. We added nine iPhone games, five iPad games, with a sixth in beta, four more games for Chromebooks. We received a new Phase II grant for development of a game to teach decision-making, two grants from the Chilean government and the Best Artwork prize at the Ed Games Summit. I could go on and probably will unless someone stops me.

Maybe you feel as if you only got a few hours worth of productive work done today. All I can say is that over the years, those productive hours add up, even if it doesn’t seem like it in the moment.
